day fifty-two.

my sister is here visiting today.
we made homemade pizzas with squash and tomatoes and now my kitchen is stocked with diet coca-cola.
nothing else to report, going to bed early, sleeping in late.

day forty-nine.

i finished reading neil gaiman's stardust last night as my fantasy selection for the speculative fiction unit of my adult popular literature class.
i don't know, it seemed like nothing happened.
no climax, no huge conflict.
there was a lack of life, of vibrancy, a neatness to it that somehow made me uncomfortable.
happy endings are not enough.

champaign! a great place to live

the only thing worse than the crime is the song written about it:

this post comes to you courtesy of emma, who is learning more and more each day that illinois is a strange place.

day forty-seven.

in honor of the olympics, i present to you:
welcome to canada: a book.

that's right, beautiful canada, where the houses are loggy and the st. bernards more dignified than your children.

hulu.com: a guide to movie tags

or, how to make the most out of your user experience

step one: alert your fellow users to the presence of breasts, and other nude parts. also, webs of sex and other sexy things.

(note: don't forget to differentiate "sex nudity" from "nudity"- including two tags to disambiguate such terms is appropriate in many cases.)

Photobucket

step two: remember to critique a lack of "step one" material. we acknowledge the fact that in this busy modern world, your viewing time is very valuable.

Photobucket

step three: oh god oh god oh god no

Photobucket

step four: be honest and thoughtful about your descriptors, choosing words that reflect both content and your overall impression of the work.

step five: acknowledge technical difficulties in a calm and productive manner. hulu will be happy to address any issues in a timely fashion.

step six: choose words and phrases that might prove useful to others when searching for films similar to this.

Photobucket

step seven: when in doubt, casually insult dolph lundgren.

day forty-five.

umbrellas are back! and in lincoln form:

being a children's book, it covers the small span of time between when lincoln was elected, to when the civil war broke out- in other words, just before most of the lincoln family began to die, including protagonist tad. but we'll just gloss over that and talk about how tad owned a goat.

also um, this:

day forty-four.

classic.

i watched a stream of the male figure skating finals last night even though the jumps make me NERVOUS.
but a good kind of nervous, like when you watch a movie about secret police and are worried that everybody who's innocent is gonna die, but the movie is still good and maybe some characters survive and/or kiss.

day forty-three.

looking at my calender, i realized that i am proctoring less hours this semester than i work in one week at my other job.
but, come finals time i should be able to pick up a bunch more exams.

as for now, i'm listening to my online class' session, drinking diet coke, and thinking i ate too many triscuits.

day forty-one.

tonight may just be the first time i cooked something to eat for lunch the next day.
i've made sandwiches the night before, but never a tupperware-ready, throw-it-in-your-insulated-floral-lunch-bag-so-you-can-make-the-most-of-your-30-minutes-between-class-and-work-without-spending-money-or-eating-food-from-an-airtight-snack-package sort of meal.
nothing fancy, just tofu and steamed vegetables. BUT i made two servings, so thursday is set too.

fiona apple is my soundtrack to domestic endeavors.

(also, work is cute sometimes)

Monday, February 15, 2010

day forty.

a gray-haired man of indeterminate age stopped his car to ask if i needed a ride while i was walking though the falling snow last night.
i offered a 'no, thank you'- i watch too much law & order to accept this as a kindness.
(but i still like to think that it was)

also, i think i'm getting sick. my ears hurt when i sneeze.

Monday, February 8, 2010

day thirty-three.

my favorite necklace no longer closes, so it is being retired for display purposes within the home.
goodnight, sweet prince. we had a good, long run.

Sunday, February 7, 2010

day thirty-two.

was there a sporting event of some kind today? i don't own a television.

went to see "a single man" at the art theatre, one of those movies that would be hard to describe because it follows the life of a man for one day, and is sort of quietly moving and doesn't really sink in until you're at home, typing up your homework assignments and listening to its original score and wanting to watch it again, to inhabit its colors and sounds, even its moments of quiet anguish. i guess you'd call that a recommendation.

Friday, February 5, 2010

day thirty.

today i attended my first professional conference. there was swag, and hot tea.

i could go tomorrow too, but i think i'll get caught up on homework. i start my new job on monday, so productivity is a must!

tonight i'm having a fancy lady dinner (and it's thai food, to boot), followed by making valentines. snow, don't stop me now.

Wednesday, February 3, 2010

day twenty-eight.

my pencil cup got a makeover.
it helps that said cup is made from a diet coke can.
